My Favorite Type of Session

I have shot a wide variety of sessions as a photographer. From families to maternity to newborn to individuals and headshots to extended families, weddings and commercial shoots. I have now focused in on families and weddings. It has been hard to hone in on a favorite and specialize because each type of photography has things about it that I love.

That being said, when push comes to shove, my favorite has to be engagement sessions!

I love getting to know my couples before the big day, when the pressure is off for them, no one is watching, and it’s a bit easier for them to relax! Without the time constraints of a wedding day, we can often go to more distant locations that just don’t work on the day of.

One of my favorite things is seeing how each couple is unique – the way they look at each other, how they respond to each other, what makes them laugh. I love hearing how they met, what they like to do together, where they grew up, what they are doing for work/school, how they got engaged, what their plans are for the wedding, and especially after the wedding. I just love hearing their stories!

A couple in love planning their wedding is more likely to be in that mode where holding hands, snuggling, and kissing is still fun πŸ˜‰ and it makes for such fun, interactive photos! In the craziness of life combined with wedding planning, it can be stressful! I think an engagement session helps a couple slow down and just take some time to be together, and hopefully escape that stress for a bit.

One more thing I love about engagement sessions is having that trial run before the wedding day – getting the couple used to being in front of my camera ahead of time, and used to me! I get to see how comfortable they are with certain poses, with getting their photos taken in general, what poses they are amazing at, and what type of direction works the best to help them be the most natural and comfortable! On a wedding day, we are often faced with a tight timeline and it helps me be prepared to work quickly
